In 2016 I was diagnosed with breast cancer… for the first time. My preemie was a year old and I did all the things. In April 2023 I was declared cancer free; I would be no more likely than anyone else to get cancer! Yay! In November 2023 I found another lump in the other breast. Stage IV triple negative breast cancer with metastases to my right hip. And like before, I am doing all the things: chemo, radiation, physical therapy. I have three kids to see into adulthood. A 25 year old son who has flown the coop, an 18 year old who is about to start college out of state and a ten year old who very much still needs her mama. My goal is to be here to at least make sure all three graduate high school and get off to college. This summer I took off three months for respite- but I will likely have to go back to work in September. Chemotherapy has taken my strength, my stamina and general good health- low blood counts and pain from recently discovered metastases in my spine have left me weak and exhausted. I am a nurse by profession and not being able to see the people we care for at work in order to prevent opportunistic infections is problematic. On top of everything, my husband and I are moving the 18 year old to Chicago for college. This kid has been my biggest champion- at 10 she was there for my last chemo during my first battle with breast cancer. She makes sure I take my meds and eat, drink enough water. She is one of the best human beings I know. Going back and forth to Chicago from Minneapolis by car or train can be tiring for anyone. As we drop her off, I am nearly incapacitated with pain and exhaustion. I have previously rented a mobility scooter, but since I am not working, it’s cost prohibitive. The chances of me living until the ten year old graduates high school are slim. I am a nurse; I know too much sometimes. I have a village of amazing people to lean on. What I don’t have is a way to continue to enjoy the time I have left. Donations would be applied to a portable mobility scooter I can take on a train or airplane, so I can spend time with my family and be their mom for a little bit longer. Any remaining funds will be put aside for a living wake, where I can enjoy you all one final time, when I’ve exhausted all avenues in this fight. I am pragmatic, and realistic about what’s to come. I try to be optimistic but I refuse to be naive. I simply want to take back a little of who I used to be and be able to keep up with my family in the time I have left. I will keep fighting and trying to be here for them for as long as possible, but that comes at a cost. If all you can help with is a share, I would be eternally grateful; a donation means I can see my kid’s shows in Chicago, participate in school functions with the ten year old and spend quality time with the 25 year old. And yes, when the time comes for the farewell party, you are invited!
